According to new data from Sea-Intelligence, port congestion is significantly benefiting the container shipping sector. The publication reported that this congestion is absorbing 2.3 million TEU of vessel capacity, which is a considerable amount.
This absorption of capacity comes at a critical time for the industry. The sector is anticipating a substantial increase in available tonnage, stemming from both newbuilding deliveries and a potential resumption of normal traffic through the Suez Canal.
The Sea-Intelligence data highlights that worsening delays have effectively rendered 6.6% of the global containership fleet unavailable. This percentage represents a significant portion of the total fleet.
The ongoing congestion is therefore masking a potential capacity shock that the container shipping industry might otherwise face. Without these delays, the market could experience an oversupply of vessels.
The report suggests that the current situation, where congestion ties up a large part of the fleet, is temporarily balancing the supply-demand dynamics in the container shipping market.
