A chemical leak at the Port of Mersin in southern Turkey led to injuries for 35 individuals. The incident occurred on Friday, September 4, according to information from Russian state news agency TASS.
The leak reportedly happened around 02:20 local time when a container on-site was damaged. Construction equipment in the vicinity struck the container, causing the breach.
Ethyl acrylate, a colorless liquid chemical known for its strong odor, began to leak from the damaged container. This prompted port authorities to order an immediate evacuation of personnel.
CBRN safety teams were deployed to the area to assess the situation. They reported that dangerous concentrations of the chemical were not present, despite the strong odor.
Nevertheless, 35 people were affected by the odor and subsequently transported to a hospital for medical attention. All affected personnel are reported to be in good health.
They will remain under observation as a precautionary measure. A safety zone has been established around the leak site, and the damaged container was moved to an isolated, protected area.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident to determine its cause and any contributing factors, as reported by Baird Maritime.
