Container ship transits through the Suez Canal have exceeded half of their pre-disruption levels, marking a significant development. This is the first instance of transits surpassing 50% of previous volumes since the onset of Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, as reported by Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide.
During the initial two weeks of October, the average weekly container ship capacity navigating the Suez Canal reached 753,000 TEU. This figure was provided by Clarksons Research, as cited in the report.
For comparison, the same period in 2023 saw a weekly average capacity of 1,457,000 TEU. The current transit levels represent a notable recovery towards previous operational capacities.
This increase indicates a partial return of container shipping activity to the vital waterway, which is a key artery for global trade and logistics. The Suez Canal's role in maritime transportation remains critical for various industries.
