Tung Chee-hwa, a former shipping executive and the inaugural Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, has died at the age of 89. The Loadstar reported that his office confirmed his peaceful passing on September 8, 2026.

Before his political career, Mr. Tung was known for his involvement in the shipping industry. His experience in this sector provided a foundation for his later public service roles.

Following his tenure as Chief Executive, Mr. Tung also held the position of Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

The Loadstar, citing Xinde Marine News, stated that Mr. Tung passed away peacefully with his close family present. His office released a statement confirming his death in the early hours of September 9.
