Japan Engine's 6UEC35LSGH engine, described as the world's first hydrogen-fuelled engine for large commercial vessels, has completed land-based testing, according to Bunkerspot. Japanese classification society ClassNK confirmed the successful conclusion of these tests.
The engine demonstrated a hydrogen co-firing rate of at least 95% during testing. This performance resulted in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by more than 95% when compared to conventional heavy-fuel-oil engines, Bunkerspot reported.
Japan Engine developed this innovative engine in collaboration with Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Yanmar Power Solutions. This joint development effort was undertaken as part of a project supported by Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
The successful land-based testing marks a significant step forward for hydrogen as a marine fuel. The engine's high co-firing rate and substantial emission reductions highlight its potential to decarbonize the shipping industry, Bunkerspot noted.
